In 1998, Maria was the only local reporter allowed into Cuba to cover the papal visit by John Paul II.

Maria has earned numerous professional awards. She has won four Emmys for her work, and was also selected by the Radio-Television News Directors Association as the winner of three regional Edward R. Murrow awards. She has received awards from the Missouri Broadcasters association, Association of News Broadcasters of Kansas and the Kansas City Press Club.

Kicking Bear Camp for kids

The Kicking Bear Organization will be holding a two-day camp at Swan Lake in Sumner on June 13 and 14. The camp is free to everyone and meals will be provided on Friday night (hamburgers and hotdogs), Saturday morning (pancakes) and Saturday afternoon (BBQ).

The Kicking Bear Organization is a nation wide mentoring program developed by bow hunter Ray Howell. It encourages adults to get involved with today’s youth to the outdoors and the sport of archery. The program is targeted to help underprivileged children or any child who hasn’t been introduced to the outdoors. Many of the children helped in the past would have never had the opportunity to experience the outdoors and the sport of archery had it not been for their mentors. We can break the cycle and put dreams in these kid’s hearts that will change not only their lives, but their families lives too.

The camp will start at 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon and we will camp Friday night. An adult must accompany at least three children. Campers must bring their own tents and sleeping bags. We have a limited supply of tents, if you need one contact TJ Peacher with the Missouri Department of Conservation at 660-646-6122. Camping is not required to participate both days. At 7 a.m. Saturday morning, there will be a pancake breakfast followed by a short service. The children will then be divided into groups and guided through the many activities. Some of the activities include sack races, tug of war, bonfire with marshmallow roast, fishing (fishing poles will be provided), shooting blue rock (the conservation department will provide the shells, guns and blue rock), and archery (bows and arrows will be provided, however if you have a bow you can bring it). Educational displays by Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, Quail Forever, US Fish and Wildlife, and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Later in the afternoon we will be treated to a BBQ.

We invite any groups with youth programs to come and join us. For more information contact Paul Teegarden at 816-807-5937 or TJ Peacher at 660-646-6122. We would like for the children and adults wishing to attend the camp to call and preregister at 660-646-6122. It is not required but it would help us know the number of people planning on attending the camp. To find our more about Kicking Bear get online at Kicking Bear.Org.

Braymer Business Students Visit KMBC News

The Braymer C-4 business education and social studies departments got a close look at the KMBC 9 News studio in Kansas City.  The students are pictured in front of the KMBC News desk. (Submitted photos)

Twenty-four students from the Braymer C-4 business education and social studies departments traveled to Kansas City on Friday, April 11th, for a visit to the KMBC 9 News studio and the Hallmark Visitors’ Center at Crown Center.  The students were accompanied by Joe Mallory and Elmer Gaug.  The students enjoyed the opportunity to see first-hand the way that the television news that we see on Channel 9 is put together and the technical process behind the scenes.  A complete tour of the studios and office complex of KMBC 9 was given by Kelly (Rankin) Smith, a 1987 graduate of Braymer High School, who has been employed by KMBC for 14 years. Kelly is involved in a great deal of the production and engineering that goes into the news broadcasts that we see on television and on the internet.  While in the studio the students were able to watch as anchorman Dan Weinbaum filmed a news segment to be used for a “quickcast” which is a brief rundown of some of the day’s news stories to be used on the KMBC 9 web-site.

Following the visit to KMBC, the students traveled to downtown Kansas City to shop and dine at Crown Center.  A visit to the Hallmark Visitors’ Center provided the students a chance to learn about the history of one of Kansas City’s finest companies, Hallmark Cards.  The students saw a short film about the company and the Hall family farm which is located near Kearney, Missouri and is used as a retreat for Hallmark artists to work and create concepts for greeting cards and other Hallmark products.  The center also featured a museum of Hallmark artifacts and past products from the century-old company which was founded in Kansas City in 1910 by J. C. Hall. At the museum, students were also able to watch as a greeting card was made by a press operator and viewed a machine that produced gift wrapping bows in merely seconds.[Read More]
