Metro and area media, local citizens seek answers to alleged tumor clusters

About 200 people filled Goodrich Auditorium last Thursday evening in Cameron to hear from state officials investigating a possible cluster of brain tumors in the area. Channel 9 TV’s Kelly Eckerman talks to a state health official who asserted that brain tumors are not caused by environmental factors. Indeed, most the presentation to the public at Thursday’s gathering was aimed at reassuring local residents that water supply systems in the area are tested and found free of contaminants.  A private test conducted at a private lab by State Rep. Jim Guest and, while declared safe to drink, contained high amounts of metals. Guest estimates at least 12 cases of brain tumors have been found in the area, which Guest believes includes Cameron, Hamilton, Plattsburg, Lawson and Lathrop.

Officials said Thursday they will be testing a known “superfund” site in a DeKalb County quarry where hazardous materials from the defunct Rock Wool insulation plant were allegedly dumped.  Anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer should register so the state can verify clusters. They can do so by calling 800-393-2829. (Photo by Anne Tezon)[Read More]
