OBITUARIES

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond's glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken

in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

Joseph S. Stratton

Joseph S. Stratton, 99, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 in Carmel, CA. He died as he had lived– with great dignity, subtle humor and great wisdom.

Born Nov. 15, 1908 in Stet, he was the youngest of nine children born to EJ and Mittie (Early) Stratton. In 1935 he married Virginia Reeser of Braymer. At the time of their marriage he operated Stratton Drugs in Braymer.

Their son Terry was born in 1943 and the day after Terry’s birth, Joe left for Europe with the U.S. Army. While he was in the Army, Virginia had moved with Terry to Oakland, CA, so it was to Oakland that Joe returned after his stint in the military. He was hired by Longs Drug Store where he stayed for 25 years and retired as Senior VP.

Joe graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty and played semi-pro baseball before going into retail. After retiring from the retail business he took up golf which he enjoyed greatly. From Golf he graduated to a stationary bicycle which he pedaled daily until a few months prior to his death– usually smoking a cigar while he rode.

He is survived by his son, Terry (Beth) and his grandchildren, Heather and Josh. His beloved wife, Virginia, died in 1984 a few month prior to their 50th wedding anniversary.

Any contributions in his memory may be made to the Stratton Scholarship Fund at William Jewell College or the VNA/hospice of the Central Coast.
